The countdown has begun for the 9th International Canlandıranlar Film Festival, organized by the Canlandıranlar Association and going live this October 18-24 thanks to Peak and the contributions of Institut Français Istanbul, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Turkish Conference Interpreters Association, Bigumigu and ABCOO. The festival, which focuses on independent animation cinema and the productions of animation in new media, will take place in Istanbul as a hybrid event on October 18-24. The guest of honor of this year’s festival is an significant name from the animation world: Sayoko Kinoshita. Ms Sayoko Kinoshita, who has accomplished numerous works in the world of Japanese animation, is the President of ASIFA and one founders of Hiroshima International Animation Festival. In accordance with this year’s festival theme, “Parallel Universes“, we embark on a colorful journey through the various universes of animation. We invite all animation lovers to discover the worlds of independent animators from Japan to Brazil, Turkey to Europe, each one a universe on its own more interesting and competent than the other.
The program of the 9th International Animators Film Festival is curated by the creative team composed of Berat İlk, Vincent Bouvard, Efe Efeoğlu, Ferhat Akbaba, Eda Çağıl Çağlarırmak and Berna Gençalp. This year’s festival includes the annual international competition, digital and theater screenings, workshops and interesting interviews. Unlike last year’s festival, which was presented completely online due to the pandemic of 2020, this year the film screenings will take place both at the French Cultural Center and on digital platforms. Other events are planned face-to-face and online. Online interviews with foreign guests will be presented to the audience with the option of simultaneous translation.

Competition Jitters at Canlandıranlar Film Festival
Canlandıranlar Film Competition, organized by Efe Efeoğlu, started in 2017 as a national organization and has become international since 2020. This year, 838 applications from 104 countries were received. Canlandıranlar Film Competition includes the categories of Best Film, Best Turkish Film, Best First Film, and Best Student Film. Canlandıranlar Film Competition Jury and Festival Guests
The jury includes Sayoko Kinoshita, one of the founders of the Hiroshima International Animation Festival and the guest of honor of this year’s festival; Animation artist Lea Zagury, co-founder of the Anima Mundi Festival and Mehmet Kurtuluş, director/producer of Kötü Kedi Şerafettin (Bad Cat) and founder of Anima Istanbul and Anima Okul.
Screenings and Selections
The program of the 9th International Canlandıranlar Film Festival, includes screenings of competing films, screenings of Guest of Honor Sayoko Kinoshita’s selections from her filmography and films she finds inspiring, a Brazilian selection prepared by Lea Zagury, and the Annecy Crystal Award- recipient feature Calamity, une enfance de Martha Jane Cannary (2020) by director Rémi Chayé.
Workshop and Interviews
In addition to film screenings, the program includes a wide range of exciting events. All presentations and interviews in English will be simultaneously translated into Turkish.
We will hold an interview titled “A Journey in the World of Animation” with Guest of Honor, Sayoko Kinoshita, whose career spans more than 40 years in the world of animation. Sayoko Kinoshita will also give information about the films in the selections she prepared for the Animation Festival.
Jury member Lea Zagury will share her story from Brazil to Los Angeles as an animator, and then the founding story of Anima Mundi.
A third interview with jury member Mehmet Kurtuluş, founder of Anima Istanbul will take place as well.
Scholar Selen Çalık Bedir and Manga translator Hümeyra Özcan will discuss Japanese anime cinema and its roots in Manga.
Ersin Karabulut, who has carried his successful comics career to the international arena and will start teaching at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, will share the story of his journey from illustrating to storytelling and education, and talk about his upcoming projects abroad.
Fırat Terzioğlu will hold a Trailer Workshop on the difficulties and possibilities of making trailers for short animated films.
An interview will take place with Albina Ulutaş, the director of the film In the Valley of the Shadow of the Dead, recently produced at the Canlandıranlar Talent Camp. The Talent Camp, ongoing since 2010, assists the production of Turkish short animations and is the original event that gave birth to the festival.
As for this year’s Homage section, Başak Ürkmez will hold a comprehensive interview with master animation artist Tahsin Özgür, who has worked at Disney for a significant part of his career.
Followers of the Canlandıranlar Festival would remember the screenings of La Péri (VR) from back in 2016. The director of La Péri (VR) Balthazar Auxietre and illustrator and animator Nurbanu Asena will talk about the world of VR/AR, their own productions and latest developments in the field.
Additionally, there will be an interview about the gaming world with Başar Muluk and his teammates from this year’s vital supporter Peak.
Award Ceremony at Tophane-i Amire
The results of the 9th International Animators Film Festival Competition will be announced in the unique ambiance of Tophane-i Amire. At the award ceremony, the jury’s decisions will be presented to the contestants and the audience.

Canlandıranlar Youtube channel contains videos of events such as talks and panels held in the previous years. This year’s program of panels and workshops will be streamed on festival days.
