This year, the Tribute Section of the Canlandıranlar Festival focuses on the works of Meral and Cemal Erez. The recently deceased Cemal Erez, a distinguished animation artist, director, translator, and painter, was among the founding members of the Canlandıranlar Association.

As project mentors at the Canlandıranlar Talent Camp, the duo supported many young animators over the years.

Having completed their fine arts education in painting and graphic design in the 1970s at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (now Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University), the couple went on to specialize in animation at the Istituto delle Belle Arti in Italy.

During their long residence in France, they produced a number of independent short films, which were selected for major international animation festivals and received several awards.

After returning to Istanbul, they continued their artistic practice and taught animation at various universities.

The Festival’s tribute to Cemal and Meral Erez will take place at the İstanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, featuring a panel moderated by Dr. Başak Ürkmez, Assistant Professor, together with screenings of their films.

A presentation on distribution and festival strategies for short films will be given by Esra Güzel and Merve Özcan. Organized in collaboration with Sinema Adası – Lands of Cinema, this event is open to all creators of short animated films.
